No, it isn't easy, but it's not too difficult either.

If you have suitable laser, access to a few chemicals and lots and lots of patience it can be done.
Results will improve over time, once you have a few holograms under your belt and have kept a log of your failures.

I don't bother with a fume cupboard, or anything like that.
I just use a plastic sheet over my kitchen work surface when I'm processing.
Patience and the ability to diagnose why a hologram has failed is key.
