Re: Whatever Became of Holography?

This is from R.R.A. Syms "Practical Volume Holography" (Oxford Engineering Scientific Series), Oxford Science Publications, 1990, page 184: "Even for weakly modulated gratings, coupled wave theory predicts a considerable difference in diffraction efficiency between the two possible re...

Re: Moving the object to reduce speckle?

Don't you think it would be easier to wiggle the mirror? Either way, I think you'd smear objective speckle but not affect subjective speckle which happens during reconstruction.

Re: How difficult is it to make hologram prints?

Happy to hear of someone wanting to do new holography, but unfortunately it will be difficult to set up a studio to do as you describe. Jeff Weil in Florida was the last independent holographer shooting masters for embossed holograms in the states, and he's now retired. Those who may still sell embo...

Re: Printout revisited

I'd recommend a KI in water bath before the drying steps. You're replacing the bromide as Dinesh mentions, and that won't be affected by the subsequent graded alcohol baths. All the alcohol baths do is dissolve the water out of the emulsion, and replace it with a faster evaporating liquid. There's r...

Re: Vintage Lasers & Holograms

I'm happy to announce that this exhibit will be extended for the next year at least. I have to say the combination of holograms with old lasers really seems to work well, though they tend to steal the show amongst the general public. But that's fine with me!

Yeah, I forgot about that. But beam ratio is usually bracketed too, so it doesn't really matter.

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

Use the detector perpendicular to the beams when measuring to calculate beam ratio. Beam ratio is independent of the orientation of a recording plate, as it determines the fringe visibility in space. Use it parallel to the recording plane when calculating exposure if you like. Since exposure is usua...
