Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

My feeling, based on a long ago run series of tests on the effect of various hardeners on freshly mixed Knox gelatin, was that isopropyl, unlike ethanol & methanol, had the possibility of leading to a crazing or milkiness of gelatin. For what it's worth, I've definitely noticed this with respec...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

If you knew the original dye used by the manufacturer, I can't see why not, assuming there was only one dye and not some mixture of dyes. Of course, it's not just the dye(s), but the dye(s) concentration. However, the exposure characteristics of the film are based on the type and concentration of t...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

As everyone I think knows, the old BB plates are and were a dramatic improvement over the old Agfa and Ilford plates. Indeed - putting apart SHSG processing. An additional question is whether a graded alcohol dry helps prevent printout. Never heard that. Maybe alcohol dehydrated layers provide bett...

Re: kodachrome type of mix for holography

i was watching a method for making Diy Kodachrome film using 3 batches of premade AgX with 3 difrent dyes then mixing them together and adding hardener and coating plates wonder if color holographic plate can be done this way, rather than mixing all 3 dyes to one batch when making the Agx? any idea...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

I was always a graded alcohol dry person for my white light transmissions. No squeegeeing or photoflo. Just very clean perfect plates… Is it possible to have both TEA pre-treatment and alcohol dehydration? I don't remember having tried this. Unfortunately I've no access to my lab currently. It may ...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

One way of testing is to take a small piece and develop it without any light exposure. If it goes dark, then the culprit is dark reaction. If so, the film may be re-claimable; I recall a conversation between Martin and Jeff Blythe in which they talked of rejuvenating old film by using a rehalogenat...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

My memory is that the Ilford material was optimised for pulse lasers, since Applied's market was the Holoprinter that worked with the ruby laser. However, I would guess that the grain size of the red sensitive material may be larger than the green sensitive material. If so, I would hazard a guess t...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

The “acutance dye” being an anti-halation dye? When I was using the 3-step alcohol dry process many years ago in which I observed a pink hue left in the 50/50 bath, it was mostly with Agfa 8E56HD and Millimask plates. I seem to remember that acutance dyes were different from AH dyes. They were used ...

Re: Reuse of Pyrogallol developer

A side benefit that I never thought much about was sensitizing dye removal although it was hard to miss the color change of the first alcohol 50/50 bath. Not sure but the change in color of your 50/50 alcohol bath you noticed may also stem from the acutance dye. My question is, what are the consequ...

Re: silver halide emulsion preparation

I've never heard of oxalic acid in that context but would be careful handling larger quantities. By the way, the Speedball diazo might be also a good candidate for glass subbing. You could apply it in a similar way as the traditional chrome alume subbing. SPB diazo gelatin seems to stick a lot bette...
