I tried to login this morning (1st attempt this morning) and I was told that I had exceeded my login attempts and had to enter one of those topsy turvy number/letter combinations. Just wondered what it was about. Half the time, I can't make out all those numbers and letters.

Exactly the same happened to me too once. I was alerted since it could mean that someone tried to login using my user name. Please let me know if the problem happens again. I'm having trouble with recognising the silly characters too but usually they are needed at very rare occasions and making them much easier to read would defeat the purpose.
