Broken Mirror Hologram

Post by JohnFP »

Funny, I never thought about it. I asked my wife to look into the object "broken mirror" and she hesitated at first. Then I heard (time delay) what I had said. I laughed. "Honey, come look in this broken mirror." hahahahaha - Only a Holographer!! Hehe.

Anyway, Danny, I am not going to use the glass etch for the mirror, although I should, I think it is the effect I want, but I will soon. Hopefully next session as it IS the idea. I just don't want to deal with the mess again so soon.

So I mixed up the plaster an poured it into a sandwich container. I then waited for it to slightly harden up. Then when it was still plyable (but if I do it again I will wait less time-it got a little to hard) I carved out a "parabola" recessed in the middle. I put the mirror on the casting material. I covered with 4 layers of 3 mil trash bag. I banged a screwdriver down in the middle. The casting material was too hard and too soft (a whole nother learning experience). It broke pefectly but plaster was all over the place. Luckely the mirror parts were all recovered and they are great. They fit together like a puzzel. I will have to make a "form" in which to glue them one by one (about 15 pieces) into the parabolic form.

Then, this is what I was thinking. How about doing 2 - 5 exposures, rotating the plate a few degrees? 5 and 10 degrees off center to the left then 5 and 10 degrees off center to the right in addition to the center hologram. That would give me 2 - 5 different references causing a swirl when you moved past the "grating". I call it a grating because that is what it will be, multiple gratings converging. It may be too much light at the center but I am going to try it anyway.

I feel this will teach me
HOE fabrication in broadband DCG by learing what reflected light off a mirror will do at different object angles combined with different reference angles.

Peace!

Things I got to shoot for:
Large view angle to be able to see most pieces at the same time.
Broadband as possible.

Good as a learning experience. But, one step at a time! I'd suggest shooting without turning for a couple of plates.
This is my first posting on the new site, so I'm hoping it'll end up as a reply to your post and not seem to start a new one!
By the way, talking of having your wife look at the Broken Mirror, is it possible to make a ring with a small piece of this hologram? I'm thinking it'll look an awful lot like an opal if you choose the right part of it.

Yes, I plan on doing a single exposure, then a 3 exposure and then a 5. I will work up to the 5 when I narrow down most parameters.

Concering the ring, great idea. I guess I will know more when I shoot. I will be shooting in 4 x 5 and from that I guess I could always "cut out a piece" for the effect you are talking about. WHich gives me an idea. I bought my wife some holographic ear rings about 10 years ago and she still has them and loves them. She keeps asking me when I am going to make her a pair. I keep telling her I need a way of "grinding the glass" and I would have to impement the UV epoxy though and through. But if these turn out maybe I could commmission your services. One of the holgorams that turned out I could use the sample of UV epoxy to seal it and then send it to you, whereas you could cut out and grind two areas for me to be used as earings. Can you cut two sections out of one 4 x 5 UV sealed hologram? I know you do a beautiful job of finishing the edges already.

Sure. In fact that Jesus/Prayer hands we shot when you were here was supposed to make two seperate keyrings. To save time we shot both images on a single 4x5 and cut up two keyrings.

Nice!!! great!

Well, I am going to try to cut and past a photo of the mirror object in this box.

Well, cannot do it. I was wonder where I can put the drawing I make when I want. I do not want to put them in an album as they usually need to be seen with the description.

Well after about 10 minutes of trying to find a service I already belonged to share a photo, here it is. The broken mirror object. I hope to shoot it tonight. Hope this works.

Sorry, John, I think I got lost during the explanations...

What effect are you exactly searching for?

It can be done in html with the img tag or use the bbcode img tag above. The img tag only works if the file extension is .gif or something bb recognizes. I am a few days from making files upload. There will be a size limit.

This was done in html.

Aurturo, whatever effect I get is what I am shooting for.

Colin, excuse me ignorance. How do you use the tag(s) to get the photo right in the message box for now? I do not even see a html tag. Do I just make it up?

I am going to give it a try following the format it brings up when the mouse curser is placed over the image tag. If it goes not work please explain.

Hey do we want to have last post in a thread at the top?

The img tag will work on files that end in an image extension like gif or jpg. If you want ot use html you need to make it up. Please be patient and I will make it posible to upload files.
