high flux LED

Post by Joe Farina »

Yesterday I received some 5mm warm white LEDs in the "high-flux" type of package, so I took some photos. These only consume 20mA and cost about 50 cents each. I'm really impressed by these. So far, my two favorites are this one and the 8mm warm white that can go as high as 300mA.

One observation that has run through all my tests is how super-adequate these LEDs are, in terms of brightness, for illuminating holograms at a close distance. This high-flux LED is rated at only 23,000mcd (@120 degree viewing angle), yet is more than adequately bright for the the hologram shown below.

(These were all taken in normal room lighting, but some of the photos look dark.)

high flux LED

Post by Joe Farina »

This afternoon I noticed some LEDs on eBay (from Light of Victory) that have about the same specifications as the one above, except a higher rating of 27,000mcd (warm-white high flux 5mm 20mA 140 degrees). These are eBay item number 350273657731. They only cost 99 cents for 15, plus $4 shipping to the US (if your're the only bidder, which appears to be no problem with these 1-day auctions). So I bought some -- that works out to 33 cents per LED.
