Please help to answer the following question:

Is it posiblle to produce a 3D holgram from a 2D photo?
Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

It depends on what you mean. It is possible to make a hologram of a 2-dimensional object like a photo, but the image in the hologram will then also be 2-dimensional. However, you can make the holographed image to appear either in front of the plate, within the plate or behind the plate.

If you have several photos taken from different angles of an object, you can use these to make a so called stereogram. This is similar to a photographic stereoimage where two images are shot from two angles, but in a stereogram you take several, up to thousands, of photos and expose these images each into a thin strip next to each other on a holographic plate. When looking at the stereogram you then look through different strips with your eyes, so each eye see a different image. By moving your head you can look at different strips and therefore different images, and this then give the illusion that the object is there.

I am not certain, but I believe there are techniques to make computer 3d models from still images of buildings, faces and such. But this has nothing to do with holography. However, by using the stereographic technique it is possible to "print" a computer 3d-model into a hologram.

I hope this gave you an idea of what is possible.

I will try to add that "more digital" part of the puzzle.

There are software packages which generate the 3d model from several pictures:
For architecture and other Image Modeler now acquired by Autodesk does the job: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc ... d=11390028
For Face/Head there's software which uses parametric face generation: http://www.facegen.com/
I'm sure there is plenty of other software packages, some might be better than others for different tasks.

But in either case, someone needs to recreate the 3d information lost in that moment when the photo was taken. If it is just one photo, then that information needs to be guessed based on someone's experience.

Quality approach would be for the artist specializing in the field to recreate 3d model from the photos as reference.
The best example I could give would be the hologram printed by Rabbitholes and created by Oleg Kereyba.

He started his 3d model from standard published pictures from the magazines, internet etc.
