I understand Michael, I know how it goes when you cannot use optimal componets.

Since it is the movement between the plate and the object (the laser can move all it wants) that normally causes the problem, having the plate in three point contact to the object also helps. In my early days I would epoxy the suckers together (plate to object) if need be. I know these are temporary solutions as you say but it can keep you going on other stuff such as film development or other aspects until oppertunity presents itself.
