Found this youtube video from an exibition of Paula Dawson's work, for example "To Absent Friends" which is composed of three 150x95 cm transmission holograms of a whole bar scene with an image depth of 27 meters.

Wow, thanks for sharing! I really wonder how she got the temperature of that room stable to at least 0.001 of a degree. And what kind of laser she used. You probably need quite a lot of power to illuminate a room that large. Maybe she had access to the National Ignition Facility? ;-) Anyone have any idea how she did it?

If I was doing this I would use my C315. However, my best guess is that these are a HeNe with an etalon.

Yeah, the laser I understand, single mode, small linewidth, highly temperature stabilized, all doable, if not easy. But the room, half a wavelength over 27 meters, that corresponds to 0.002 C using the expansion coefficient of brick. A bar in a cave perhaps?

For a similar kind of display she apparently uses a 5W Verdi for playback, because also the playback laser has to have at least the same coherence length. Some info at the end of this pdf:

Too bad a lot of the links on pages that link to her are dead. I'd love to read her thesis, but can't find a working link.

The large holograms are made with a krypton laser, and the small bar tile holograms with an Argon, all according to her video at her website http://www.pauladawson.com.au. Click through the gallery to the video. I believe she describes her work in the paper "Holographic Memory Theatre" published in Proceedings of the International Symposium on Display Holography, Illinois: Lake Forest College, 1989, pp. 429. Unfortunately, I have not found a copy.

Thieu, I have a copy of a paper describing her art work, but more from an artistic point of view. However, there are some images of her setups. PM me if you want a copy.

Thanks for the link to her video. "Can you open the shutter for me darling?", hehe. Seeing all those people in the bar makes it even more fascinating how she achieved the required temperature control. She must have used very long settling times.

How much difference would it make if a 532 nm laser with a lower coherence length was used instead during playback?
