That is great!
If you like that try to find a copy of this old out of print book:
Procedures in Expermental Physics by John Strong 1986 or if you are a collector get the 1938 edition.

No I haven't, but its comforting to know how its done How many people do you think can do that?
I like the all in one, do it yourself type hobbyist. It seems like these types are going away, or just becoming fewer.
Colin,
Thanks for the book tip, I'll search it out. Have you seen "Light and its Uses" By C.L. Strong
This was a collection of articles from the Scientific American The Amateur Scientist.

Hi -
No, I haven't made any apparatus(es?) lately. But a family member is interested in making his own CRT. He found a webpage where a guy made his own, and he's following the steps: http://www.sparkbangbuzz.com/crt/crt6.htm It's an interesting webpage.

Wow, watching that is strangely enervating... Yeah no kidding that kind of do it yourself is dying. Even my kind is dying. I don't make my own parts, but even making stuff w/ the parts is getting harder. Surface mount is scary, may not be able to find usable parts some day. And today (which is why I am fuming) I went into my local Borders where I like to buy electronics books and they ditched their electronics section! Nothing on practical applications/ projects. Grrr. Shine on vacuum tube man, shine on!
