An attempt to exorcise the ghosts of bad holograms past by indulging in avant-garde hyperkitsch parody. I believe Dinesh will be attempting something similar - we can discuss the mechanics of the agreed swap later.

BB-640 plate, 7% TEA presoak (was trying for garish green - should have used more TEA) Single-beam reflection, uncollimated, Exposure 6 seconds at about 100 uJ/cm^2, 660 nm. Developer: JD-4, bleach: Brilland. Lighting: OptiLed amber LED.

Single beam reflection? Sure this is not a PhotoShop job?

The background is the cleanest I have ever seen. Love to see more photos from different angles.

Your skepticism is understandable, but the pic was straight from the camera - I just increased the compression to get the file size down. The background is not quite so so clean in real life, mostly due to poor blocking of stray light, reflections off black velvet, and scattered light from the home-made concave mirror behind the skull. I chose a viewing angle that minimized this. Also, the beam was fairly dirty at the bottom of the plate. The amber LED lighting helped to increase apparent contrast - the already very low emulsion scattering was reduced further by narrowband lighting.

I think the main problem is that the camera (Kodak DC215) just doesn't capture shadow detail very well, producing an unfairly flattering image. Blacks come out much blacker than in real life. Since the image content was the main point of interest, I didn't worry about this too much. I might try making a stereo pair in the next few days...

Superb hologram, would you sell it?

Whatever your camera settings, postprocessing, etc, it is a great hologram. Somehow you are getting extremely high contrast.

I would like to buy one too. I need some holograms to show people who ask, and this will be a good one. Send me a mail if I can buy one from you.

Once again you've come up with a hologram of high quality.

Bravo! Bravo!

Fantastic, fabulous Denisyuk.

Do you have more detail about the amber led power and illumination distance to the hologram?

I'm using the Optiled "Chip" series designer MR-16 spot lamp (amber).
Data here: http://www.optiled.biz/products/products.html
Purchased here: http://www.laserreflections.com/LED.htm

The lamps are ceiling mounted, pointed diagonally down at wall mounted holos. Distance to the holo is very short - only 32 inches (0.8 m). The brightly illuminated patch is about 5x10 inches. Even at this short distance the image is acceptably clear.

With a silicon photodetector I measure about 150 microWatts per cm squared at the holo, when pointing the detector at the lamp. The lamp specs give brightness at two distances close to my working distance. At 2 feet (0.6 m), brightness should be 189 fc or 2029 lux. at 4 feet (1.2 m) brightness is 31 fc or 548 lux.

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of selling my holograms at present. Besides the amount of time this would take, I don't consider them to be up to commercial standards - they really only look impressive with amber LED lighting and are at best only OK under white halogen lights and so might not serve your demo purpose well. Also this latest one needs considerable cleanup of the setup and reshooting to be at it's best. I don't know when I'll be able to do this - I would rather do something new than rehash this scene.

But if you're still interested... I might be open to a swap - trading for a new work of yours on the theme of holographic excess (a parody of either vulgar kitsch or artistic pretentiousness). Photo to be displayed in this forum. This project is an extension of the idea that Dinesh and I had of exchanging a parody of the hokey old skulls and chessmen holographic themes. To keep this from getting out of hand, the offer is restricted to you and Kris. Contact me at tom.burgess at shaw.ca if interested.
