Exposure Timer controller

I have a mic stand which I can extend to over a meter. but in my table I designed it with complete cover to isolate the whole setup from external light and heat. So I really need to find something stable enough to stay within the table, and as mainly I will be working with MBDCG, accuracy of exposure is not of that a big deal, so maybe voltmeter is still suitable.
in the picture below is the coil shutter with mic stand and an objective lens on it.
