Here are some thoughts. The signal to noise ratio of your final image is limited to the signal to noise ratio of your master. Getting a good H1 is an art in it's self. Bright is not as important as no "foggy glow". I would think you are getting noisy shadows.

Also you will need a little fill light in your shadows. Even reflecting some stray light off of foil helps. If you have two beam polarzation issues you can bound the second beam of a white diffuser like egg shell and it will randomize the polarization. Figure a contrast of 10 to 1 from the bright spots to shadows will be easy to make work.

Justin, for a diffusing object, you don't have to worry about polarization of the object illuminating beams. Diffusing object randomly polarize the light bouncing off of it anyway. So add that second object beam and dont worry about polarization.

If the Budah is spectral (glossy or shiney), then use this technique to rotate the polarization of that extra beam.
