Painting the emulsion side of plates and film

I would imagine an oil based paint is the only one that should be used so the emulsion does not swell when painted. I think it was mentioned that the high temp flat black for barbques works well.

Does the painting also protect the silver hologram and make it last longer. Is it a good idea to paint/seal it for longevity?

I recommend glossy black. The particles put in to "flatten" the black scatter the light and make it look "less black". I let the paint dry very well and then cover it with vinyl to protect against water and fingerprints.
