Thank you Kaveh! Very nice. One suspects that the submerged fringes produced with wet then dried emulsions could be retrieved either with a
weird prism/index matching arrangement or reapplication of moisture - maybe there is a Spy Kids application for this.

Yes, with some sort of prism assembly you can send the beam in, and with swelling too, but the swelling must be comparable to that in water.

So would an inline hologram still be visible? or it's focal point changed?

I would want to examine the original again (don't think of this experiment as coming out "wrong", think of it as "unanticipated"). Maybe the image is trying to come out the edge of the glass. Maybe this is a way to edge light?

Try a few sequential angles and see if they conform to Kaveh's explanation.
