My friend Prof. Dan Burkey pointed me to this news story about a picture of a little girl in the middle of a road, used for... well check it out: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/watch-gi ... d=11584621. Cracks us up how the reporter and the commenters keep calling it a hologram.
The thing is, with fancy retroreflective beads patterned just right, you could (in principle) make something just as good as a hologram from the driver's perspective. Whether it is good public policy to force people to drive through virtual obstacle courses projecting animated 3D images of small children is another matter.
