Having bought a DSLR camera, I wanted to test it here on the forum, by taking a photo of a graph obtained from Google AI. My last SLR was a silver halide film camera in the 1990's. Technology sure does move fast with regards to cameras. This is just an entry-level Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, but the features seem mind-boggling to an old person like me. I disabled the auto-focus and used manual focus with an f-stop all the way down to f-22, and even then it took a decent picture just being held in the hand (no tripod). These DSLR's must be very sensitive to light.

Anyway, I asked the AI for a graph showing how gelatin pH relates to turbidity (light scattering). I was not able to find the actual reference for this graph. AI can be mystifying, because the answers seem to make sense, but sometimes I'm not able to find the actual source for its answers. The above graph does make sense. On my last DCG hologram (with type B gelatin), I moved the pH from 5.38 to 6.29 and the results were excellent.

Probably because AI does not use any single source as reference. It's basically a "statistical machine" that takes millions (billions?) of data and "deduces" a result based on probability. Probability calculations determine the strength of the nodes in the neural network (fair disclosure, I'm not a fan of AI. I believe it deteriorates from the power and ability of human reasoning.)

I was, however, curious about the effect of pH on DCG. I found (below) an article from "Light Sensitive Systems - Chemistry and Applications of Non Silver Halide Photographic Processes". The note on the margin is mine.

Also, I believe 'turgidity' refers to the water content. I was curious how pH could affect scattering, ie how does the hydrogen ion concentration determine scattering profiles ( pH = -log[H+] ). I was wondering if, perhaps hydrogen, with just one electron, had a high magnetic moment - and, if so, the scattered light would be polarised.

Anyway, quick search on Google told me that 'turgidity' refers to water content in gelatin. Full disclosure: I'm no fan of Google either, being the luddite that I am. But sometimes needs must... :)

Anyway, referring to the book by Komar referred to above, I found a section of humidity in dichromated gels (below).

Thanks for your comments and the pages from the book by Kosar. That book always has something new, no matter how many times I look at it.
