I’ve recently been thinking a lot about my old friend and “Photon Plumber” Rich Rallison; master holographer, “Johnny Appleseed” for the DCG material, and all around nice guy. There are ten holograms he made in the Vintage Laser Archive here, including two that are new. The first new one was kindly donated by Mr. Jon Robertson of Daystar Lasers. It’s a DCG wine glass he found in the estate of Ivan Dryer of Laserium fame.

The second is a nice HOE made for Voxel. I’m going to list the holograms I have in chronological order, because it amazes my how long he was making them. But to start, here’s a pic of Rich and me at an OSA conference in 1986.

We first met in 1981, when he flew me out to Utah to interview for my first job after leaving laser school in Vincennes, Indiana. I probably screwed him over by first accepting, then turning the job down and going on to Silicon Valley instead. He never mentioned it. Anyway, we worked together on short projects a few times over the years and I always got to see him at holography conferences.

Roger Daltry from 1977. Offered for sale as a promotion in his “One Of The Boys” album, it didn’t sell well and so is extremely rare.

Goblet from the early 1980s. Rich started out with apothecary jars, then went to these goblets. A consistent crowd pleaser, each one is unique. The two in this collection came from the estate of Jerry Fox.
