Building a new plate holder

Post by erose »

I am designing a new plate holder. It will be for 4x5 plates. I wonder if anyone has suggestions for the best way to actually secure the plates? It seems there are two options for the "clamping" of the plate: One would put tension across the width of the plate, edge to edge. The other would grab the edges front to back.

The part that is making me crazy is that I built plate holders many years ago and used them very successfully. But I gave them to Rudie Berkhout to use at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and after he died have no idea what happened to them. I can not find any drawings or photos of them either. I remember the general construction was aluminum angle, bar and thumb screws.

Suggestions, photos or new ideas are all welcome as I try not to redesign the wheel.

Thanks John. I take it you shoot sideways? By that I mean with the reference beam coming in from the right or left.

Here's how I made mine from concrete: http://www.techsoft.no/holography/holder.htm

With this plateholder, you can shoot on either side or from top.

Concrete! I am impressed. For what I am doing it will be mostly SB reflections and I want as little shadow as possible from the holder. Both of those would work well.

Well then, if you are only shooting SBR, why take all the trouble to make a plateholder. Just use this technique. It is by far more stable then a plateholder and object not touching. Basically, rest the plate directly on the object. ;-)

Yes I know that technique. But I want to be able to position the plate in relationship to objects with a bit more control. I've shot plenty of SBRs. I also want this plate holder to function for other types of holograms including holding H2s for both transmission and reflection copies. I'll get around to building larger plate holders eventually for masters.
