Just wanted to know if the JDS Uniphase 2218-025mls can be used for holography. Used units are quite cheap, but on the JDS page i couldn't find anything about coherent length or so.
So i wanted to ask you experts if this could be a super-budget blue laser or if it's rather in the "can't use" category (It probably is i guess)... =/

Sorry, none of the JDS air cooled argon lasers will work for holography.

Just out of curiosity, why are they unsuitable?

Hello Tom,

Air cooled argons usually have sealed cavities and cannot take an etalon. There's not really enough power for one anyways.

Without that, the coherence will be pretty short.

low power, short coherence....very good to make copies of holograms....or very shallow objects

Ah yet, I remember now. The etalon has to be inside the laser cavity to work, it can't just be kludged on to a laser not designed for it.

That is the problem with diodes. We have to try to lock a single frequency from outside the cavity. It makes me wonder of some of the diode tricks would work on one.
