My initial thought was that these spheres were obviously placed at the nodes of a standing wave. But then, Joy asked: "Would not the spoon have disrupted the sound waves" Well, yes, it would have changed the frequency and the nodes would have shifted. The nodes did not shift, so why didn't the sound waves disrupt the standing wave? We looked closely and noticed that the spoon was ribbed, it was not continuous. Therefore, the gaps in the spoon would have allowed the sound wave to continue. Interesting, though.
