I had just made my first hologram!!

Post by javamiggs »

After some serious preparations and thousands of readings, I finally made my own hologram. Im very very happy I swear I would dare to run around naked shouting "eureka".

Im a very lucky guy!! It's the first holographic plate I shoot and "puff", like some heavenly magic, I made a hologram out of it. It's a Denisyuk configuration using PFG-01 63mmx63mm plate, a 5 mW laser, and a JD-2 developer. I had just one bad luck, because it was too dark I accidentaly scratched the emulsion when I placed it infront of the object. =(

I have some doubts before and I thank everyone in this forum for enlightening me on some details. Thank you very much guys. I usually would not do something unless Im very sure of it. I think thats the reason I was able to make it in just one try.

Whew. The entire process took only for about 30 minutes. I have never been so impatient in my life like what happened after I develop the plate. The 8 minutes it took seems like a year! I think I was just so excited (excited to discover my failure maybe!). My hands were shaking and sweating when I view the plate with the laser. When I discover that indeed I made a hologram, I swear I was jumping and shouting around the lab like a mad man. =)

How about you guys? Im very interested to know what were foolish things you've done after you made your first hologram?

I remember when I made my first hologram. It was in my bathroom at 2 AM (sure that everyone sleeps in the house). It was 3 coins of 2 canadian dollar (I discover laser diode holography when I was leaving in Montreal).
Like you, I was very excited when hologram slowwwwwwwly dry and what a felling when I see the 3 coins. I was so proud that I wake-up my wife (in the middle of the nigth) to show her my 2,5 * 2,5 hologram. She look it with sleepy eyes, said : "Nice, congrat..." and fall asleep immediatly... For my, it tokes a long time to calm down and finaly go to bed and dreaming about my next holograms...

Welcome aboard.

You are one of a small crowd. Congratulations! Hardly any Holographers I have spoken to have been successful on their first attempt. Keep up the good work.

When I made my first hologram I was about 19 years old and still lived at home. I set up a sandbox holography kit in the basement. I went through all the film that came with the kit with no hologram. I did get color. Even that was exciting. Getting red color on black and white film. When I showed my father that he said uh hu.... I said again, "You are looking at the light being refracted, color from black and white film"....Uh hu. Well, I ordered a box of Agfa plates. The first one was OK but the second one was great. I wish I had that hologram today. I was a little white car with a man setting on the hood and the car was on a black optics book with the end of the book facing the plate with the words OPTICS in white. I was so excited I ran upstairs showed my father, showed my sisters, ran next door and showed my grandfather and my Aunt then just sat outside in the sunlight for about 2 hours just staring at it from every possible angle. It was great.

Ahhhhhhh, the good ol days!!!

Peace, have fun and happy holographing.

My father owned a house about 40 miles outside London with a large garage. I told all my friends I was going to disappear for about three weeks and, armed with Fred's book, then built a sand table. I finally finished my first one at 3am, after the third or fourth try. I propped it by the bedside lamp so it'd be the first thing I saw when I woke up. The next morning I rushed out into the garden still wearing a bathrobe and stared at this piece of glass with a big silly grin. Suddenly I discovered that I could be see from the road which was the main road to London. I was being stared at by all the commuters in a long line of cars!
By the way, at PCGGI, we recounted how we all started in holography. Presumably this'll be up somewhere.

Yep, I've got something close to 10 hours of video to edit and I've only made it through the download of the first three tapes. Once I've made it through Colin's talk I'll stop and do some editing and upload some excerpts.

If someone says it can't be done but they haven't tried it, don't believe them.

I did not think I talked for 10 hours.

I think I overexposed the first and underexposed the second. I hope the 3rd one would be perfect. Im just wondering, I can reconstruct the first one using laser but not the second one. Im using an overhead projector when I shoot this picture.

My next aim is to have a split beam transmission hologram. My ultimate aim is to do a Holographic Interferometry for my thesis. =).

Which would be better for interferometry? A transmission type or a reflection?
